The New York Landmarks Conservancy has awarded a Sacred Sites grant in the amount of $35,000 to Northport’s St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, the oldest house of worship in the village. The award, which was the Conservancy’s largest among five grants to Long Island churches in 2018, boosted the recently concluded St. Paul’s Capital Campaign, “Restore-Rebuild-Rejoice,” which netted more than $300,000. The grant funds will defray costs of repairing and renovating the steeple, which has graced Northport’s Main Street since 1873. Members of the congregation of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, along with their pastor, Rev. Bette Sohm, were on hand to accept the award at a press conference at St. Paul’s on December 4, 2018.
