NORTHPORT METHODIST CHURCH TO OFFER BEATLES THEME AT JULY 14 OUTDOOR SERVICE ON MAIN STREET
Guitarist Bill Turley, a Northport resident and St. Paul’s member, will lead the singing.
Northport, NY….July 3, 2018… Northport’s oldest church, St, Paul’s United Methodist on Main Street, will resurrect some golden Beatles oldies in a special outdoor service on July 14, 2019. All are invited to join the congregation in a lively revival of selected songs by the Fab Four that evoke the spirituality of nature and interpersonal relationships. With the music led by Northport resident Bill Turley on guitar, the service will begin at 10 a.m. in the back yard of the parsonage at 288 Main Street, Northport, just east of the main church building.
“This idea grew out of a survey this past spring that polled the congregation for their favorite hymns,” explained Rev. Bette Johnson Sohm, the St. Paul’s pastor. “Many of the choices were not surprising, of course, but a couple of people wrote, ‘Anything by the Beatles.’ We took the suggestion seriously, looked into some of the group’s music, and picked songs that would be fun, engaging, and appropriate.”
Musician Bill Turley will lead songs that include “Here Comes the Sun,” “All You Need is Love,” “Blackbird,” “We Can Work it Out,” and “In My Life/Across the Universe.” Mr. Turley, who performs at various area venues, is an attorney and longtime resident of Northport. He is a member of the St.Paul’s Board of Trustees.
Summer outdoor services are a tradition at St. Paul’s. The church plans at least one more in addition to the July 14 Beatles-theme worship, at which Rev. Sohm plans to deliver a sermon titled “Where Does God End.” The service will include Communion. “We break bread that is gluten-, dairy-, and nut-free, and our cup is filled with unfermented juice,” Rev. Sohm said. “We do this to welcome to Christ’s table all of God’s children.”
Established in 1873, St. Paul’s United Methodist Church is Northport’s oldest continuously worshiping congregation. Led by Rev. Bette Johnson Sohm, the church offers Sunday worship, a full range of church school classes, a youth group, adult Bible study, and community ministry. In late 2015, the congregation adopted a Welcoming Statement to offer full participation and ministry to all, regardless of sexual orientation or identity, race, or creed. The office is located at 288 Main Street, Northport, NY 11768, and can be reached at 631-261-0804.
